Title: Prioritize Dead Birds When Testing For Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza.

Proper sampling order for early detection.

  1. Dead birds. Detection will be earlier. Prevalence of the virus increases faster in the dead bird pool. Stop. If you notice an unexplained increase in bird death, please keep mortalities in the barn until test results are available.
  2. Birds showing signs of illness. Test if there are not enough mortalities to achieve ideal swab count.
  3. Healthy birds. Only test if there are not enough dead or ill birds. Detection will be later and require more birds be tested.
